$7.7M paid out to ineligible MaineCare recipients
AUGUSTA, Maine—The head of Maine's health and human services department is telling lawmakers that a computer problem resulted in the state inadvertently paying out $7.7 million in Medicaid services to more than 7,700 people who weren't eligible.
Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew released the numbers Friday following weeks of analysis by the department.
MaineToday Media (http://bit.ly/JLf13e) reported that Mayhew said the state will likely have to pay back $3.8 million to the federal government because of the mistaken payments, where Mainers received services covered by MaineCare, the state's Medicaid program, to which they weren't entitled.
The Appropriations Committee on Friday was given an explanation of how the mistake will affect the department's future budget needs.
