AUGUSTA, Maine—Former Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap has filed papers to declare his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Olympia Snowe.

Dunlap's entry sets up a 2012 primary against fellow Democrat Jon Hinck, a Maine House member from Portland.

The Bangor Daily News ( http://bit.ly/uGF4gT) said Wednesday that Dunlap, of Old Town, filed with the Federal Election Commission on Monday.

Hinck, who's filed the same paperwork, says he commends Dunlap for taking that step and looks forward to shaping a dialogue.

On the Republican side, Snowe is facing primary challenges by former Maine congressional candidate Scott D'Amboise and conservative activist Andrew Ian Dodge.
