NEW GLOUCESTER, Maine—Maine's contestant in the Miss USA pageant is riding high after finishing in the top five, the highest finish ever for a contestant from the Pine Tree State.

Katherine "Katie" Ashley Whittier, the fourth runner-up, says it was a "huge rush" to hear her named called at the Miss USA pageant in Las Vegas. It was only her second pageant, after winning the Miss Maine USA competition in November.

The former University of Maine basketball player spent 2008 playing pro basketball in Europe. She attended the Miss Maine USA pageant last year to watch teammate Ashley Underwood participate.

Underwood persuaded her friend to try out this year. The Portland Press Herald says Whittier didn't decide to participate until about three weeks before the Miss Maine pageant was held.
