Former Maine State Police chief charged with child sexual abuse

A former Maine State Police chief is facing child sexual abuse charges. The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department said Andrew Demers, 73, of New Gloucester, was arrested Monday, accused of having sexual contact with a minor younger than 12 for several months. Demers served 26 years with the State Police, six as chief starting in 1987. He retired in 1993. Investigators said they conducted several interviews with witnesses and the suspected victim before arresting Demers. He was freed on $5,000 bail with condition that he has no contact with children under 16.
