Small quake jiggles the earth northwest of Portland, Maine

A small earthquake jiggled the earth near Sebago Lake in southern Maine early this morning, officials said.

The United States Geological Survey recorded the 1.9-magnitude quake at 3:28 a.m. It was located one mile south-southeast of North Windham, or 12 miles northwest of Portland.

Windham police said they fielded numerous calls about the earthquake, but no injuries were reported.

“We didn’t even feel it here,” a dispatcher said.

Tom Hawley , a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said this is common with a quake of such a small magnitude.

“I’m surprised anyone felt it at all,” he said.
