A 350-ton tunnel boring machine grinded through the last few yards of clay and concrete and emerged in South Boston today after a year long project. The emergence marked the completion of a two mile sewer overflow control project, which stretched from near Castle Island to the Bayside Expo Center.

At left, tunnel workers Steve Clegg (left) and Palle Kurek (right) emerged through the cutterhead of their 19-ft boring machine just after noon on August 13.
