LITCHFIELD, Conn.—A former religion instructor from Watertown has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy.

David Stanco pleaded on Tuesday to second-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor under an agreement that will spare him a trial but means a five to eight-year prison term. Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 10.

Stanco was the victim's religion instructor at St. Thomas Parish in Thomaston. The Republican-American reports that prosecutors allege the boy turned to Stanco "when he was going through tough times."

Police launched an investigation in March when a 42-year-old man came forward to claim he had been molested by Stanco decades ago. The investigation led to more recent case.

The 57-year-old Stanco did not speak other than to say he understood the terms of his plea agreement.
