HARTFORD, Conn.—A former kitchen worker at a Simsbury restaurant has been sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison for stabbing and nearly killing a cook.

Tawfik Atik of New Britain was sentenced this week after pleading no contest to charges including first-degree assault for stabbing Mohamed Alkatabi in September 2009.

Authorities sat the two men were having an argument when Atik stabbed Alkatabi in the left abdomen with a 12-inch knife. The knife only penetrated an inch or two, but almost killed him.

Atik's lawyers argued for a lighter sentence, saying their client had no criminal record and said the stabbing was an accident.

The prison sentence will be followed by three years of probation.
