ENFIELD, Conn.—The lawyer for a Hartford police officer who was arrested after a fight in his home says his client defended himself against someone he believed was an intruder.

Christopher White faces charges of illegal use of a firearm and two counts each of reckless endangerment, threatening and assault. The 34-year-old officer was released on $75,000 bail and is due to appear in Enfield Superior Court Monday.

Kyle Macci, White's lawyer, says when his client returned home Saturday he suspected an intruder in his home, grabbed a handgun and was tackled to the floor and punched by another man.

Macci says the person was a guest of White's girlfriend.

Police say the incident Saturday occurred at White's home in Enfield, but would not release more details.
