School enrollment declining
The number of students entering Medfield schools is expected to shrink over the next five years, district officials say. Enrollment districtwide is currently pegged at 2,970 pupils, according to numbers submitted to the Massachusetts School Building Authority in January. That total is expected to fall to 2,195 by 2017, a decrease of about 26 percent. Part of the reason for the lower enrollments can be attributed to a decreasing number of births in district families, especially since 1999. In that year, there were 162 children born to district residents. The number reached a low of 87 in 2010, 46 percent fewer children born than at the turn of the millennium, according to the new data.
