The Board of Selectmen has called a meeting with the Army Corps of Engineers to discuss cleanup strategies at the grounds of Medfield State Hospital. The selectmen will discuss possible alternatives to the currently planned capping (and, later, removal) of an oil-spill site along the banks of the Charles River, and also the state’s plans to cap another construction-debris location on the property. “It seems a waste of money to merely cap’’ the oil spill site this year, then remove the oil and cap next year, said Selectman Osler Peterson, Similarly, Peterson said the debris “should not just be capped in place as proposed, but rather should be removed down to below groundwater levels,’’ with waste material then stored in a secure container on site. The meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Town House. At least two appeals seeking delay and further review of the Charles River plans have been filed with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, one by petitioning residents, and one by the Charles River Watershed Association and the Trustees of Reservations. - James O’Brien
