Police are investigating whether a trucker arrested in Chelmsford in July is tied to two violent attacks in Pennsylvania - the fourth state where police have probed his possible links to unsolved crimes.

Adam Leroy Lane, 42, of Jonesville, N.C., is being investigated in Pennsylvania in connection with the fatal stabbing of Darlene Ewalt, 42, on July 13 in her West Hanover Township house, according to Karl Schmidhamer, a Pennsylvania State Police spokesman.

Police in Conewago Township said they were looking into whether Lane is linked to the July 17 slashing of a woman who survived.

Lane was arrested July 30 after he allegedly broke into a 15-year-old girl's room in Chelmsford in the middle of the night and tried to rape her. The girl's father heard her scream and held the masked and gloved Lane in a headlock until police arrived, authorities said.

Lane was carrying knives, a belt with Chinese throwing stars and choke wire during the attack, said Corey Welford, a spokesman for the Middlesex district attorney.

Police also allegedly found in the cab of his truck a copy of the movie, "Hunting Humans," which is about a serial killer, Welford said.

Lane was being held without bail in Massachusetts pending arraignment. It was scheduled for Thursday, but has been postponed and no new date has been determined, Welford said yesterday.

Lane is also charged in New Jersey in the fatal stabbing of Monica Massaro, who was found dead July 30. Police noticed similarities between the stabbing and the Chelmsford home invasion.

New Jeresy police said they also confirmed Lane was in the area of Massaro's apartment around the time she was killed.

Last week, police in Jonesville, N.C., said they would question Lane in the death of police Sergeant Gregory Keith Martin, who was killed after pulling over a stolen pickup truck in 1996. Police said there were similarities between Lane and a composite drawing of a suspect in that case.

The investigation into Lane and any links to crimes along his trucking route is continuing, Welford said yesterday. "We are working with other states and federal authorities to connect the dots along Adam Leroy Lane's trucking route to determine whether he may be responsible for other violent crimes," he said.
