The aging steel span over the Taunton River has gained fame in recent years not as a bridge but as a barrier: Politicians have preserved the 101-year-old Brightman Street Bridge to try to block large liquefied natural gas tankers from the river and to calm residents who feared an explosive terrorist attack along their shores.
