ATLAS MAP by Teresa M. Hanafin, Boston.com Staff

The map above shows the percentage of individual tax returns, by zip code, with an Adjusted Gross Income of $100,000 or more for tax year 2004 in the City Weekly region. Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) includes income from all sources, such as salary and interest, minus deductions like IRA contributions. It does not include itemized deductions such as home mortgage interest.

The gray pinpoints indicate zip codes in which there were either fewer than 10 or more than 75% of returns with an AGI of $100K or more. The IRS believes that too few or too many such returns in one zip code could make the filers identifiable, so it withholds those numbers because of privacy concerns. Missing zip codes indicates no $100K filers.

NOTE: To separate the pinpoints to see them more clearly, just zoom in using the scale on the left of the map. To move the map around, use the arrows above the scale, or just click the map with your cursor, hold it down, and move it around.
