Police recover head of Columbus statue

Who beheaded Christopher Columbus?

That's the mystery confronting Boston police after they discovered on June 2 that someone removed the head from the Spanish explorer's marble statue in the North End's Columbus Park.

Six days later, police found the missing head sitting in the vestibule of 32 Sheafe St. in the North End. ``It's now in the custody of police," police spokesman Michael McCarthy said yesterday.

Police have no suspect. McCarthy said it was uncertain when the head would be reattached.
