WEYMOUTH -- It started softly, the applause, as if people weren't sure they should do this in church. But it grew louder gradually, then suddenly, until pretty soon the cheering rose toward the ceiling and echoed off the walls, everyone smiling, laughing, clapping, all of it for an appreciative priest who watched in awe from the altar.
