Springfield teen slain; 4 others held

SPRINGFIELD -- A Springfield teenager was stabbed and stomped to death and four teenagers, including a 14-year-old boy, have been charged with murder.

Police responding to a public housing development in the city found the victim, James Brown, 18, on the sidewalk just before 9 p.m. Saturday. He was pronounced dead at Baystate Medical Center.

Brown was killed when he intervened in a fight, police said. The 14-year-old, whose name was not made public because he is a juvenile, allegedly was one of those involved in the fight. The victim intervened and chased off the 14-year-old, who returned with three older teens, police said. The four youths then attacked Brown, stomping on him and then fleeing, police said.

Edwin Smith, Tim Rudd, and Dana White, all 18, are to be arraigned today on charges of murder and assault and battery.

The 14-year-old is charged with murder, and assault and battery with a knife. He is to be arraigned today in Springfield Juvenile Court.
