Jim Veno, Maine golf legend

PORTLAND, Maine -- Jim Veno, one of the great golfers in Maine history, died Wednesday from a heart attack he suffered at Maine Medical Center. He was 64.

Mr. Veno, who grew up in Orono, is one of four golfers to have won both the Maine Amateur and the Maine Open golf tournaments. He is the only golfer to have won the Maine Amateur, the Maine Open, and the Maine schoolboy title in the same year, in 1962.

Mr. Veno won the Maine schoolboy championship five times, the first as an eighth-grader.

He was known for driving the ball more than 300 yards before metal drivers.
