Maxi Baier, 86, Olympic champion in figure skating

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany -- Maxi Baier, who at age 15 won the 1936 Olympic pairs figure skating title, died Friday in a retirement home in Garmisch-Partenkirchen after a lingering illness, her daughter said yesterday. . She was 86.

Germany's youngest Winter Olympics champion captured the pairs with her future husband, Ernst Baier, at the games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. After the Olympics, the couple won the European and world championships three years in a row before turning professional in 1941.
