V. Hakulinen, 78, Olympic medalist

HELSINKI -- Veikko Hakulinen, a Finnish cross-country skier who won three Olympic gold medals, died after being hit by a car, police said yesterday. He was 78.

Mr. Hakulinen's first big victory came in the 50-kilometer race at the 1952 Oslo Olympics. In all, he won three gold medals, three silvers, and one bronze at the Olympics, competing in 1952, 1956, 1960, and 1964.

He also won seven medals at the World Cross-Country Championships in the 1950s.
