Mariam Kandil // Cambridge
Most of the time when I met people for my project photographing and interviewing Muslims, we spent at least two hours together. With Mariam Kandil, it was about a half-hour. I'm not sure why, but for her, there just wasn't much to say about being a Muslim in New England. She likes her community. She likes her school, MIT. She likes her major, cognitive studies. She likes her religion. It is simple for her, just a happy person living life. ''I just want people to know that Muslims and Muslim Americans are normal people like you and me. Especially women, a lot of the stuff you see in the media oh, those oppressed Muslim women that's not true. There are so many of us here at MIT, Harvard, and BU, all over the place. A lot of us are studying science and math and history, everything you can think of, so we're just normal people.''
