The Photos of 2005
horse being saved
East Bridgewater, April 13: I was at the house just after supper. It was pushing dusk. I had the police scanner on. ... I heard the chief say, "Gimme some ropes and some tarpaulin." Then he said, "Call for a veterinarian." I just headed down to the scene. A 29-year-old horse had wandered down near a river and got stuck in the mud and fell over and was flailing around. With a large animal, you have to get it on its feet right away, or it'll start going into shock and die right there. It was too late to make the paper, and, let's face it, they're not going to bust the page for a silly old horse. I've been doing this for 35 years. I'd rather have a sunset in the paper. Who wants to look at dead people all the time? I mean, come on, life is sunsets and horses and flowers and coyotes. Happy stuff. The horse gets saved.
