Last month, high-profile, high-tech highbrows Ray Kurzweil and Bill Joy penned a New York Times op-ed essay calling for ''a new Manhattan Project" to develop scientific defenses against biological viral threats, natural or human made. Flirting with the memory of the original Manhattan Project, the authors fretted that the publicly available 1918 influenza genome constitutes a ''weapon of mass destruction." ...
