A return to death squads?
THE ARTICLE "US considers elite hit squads for Iraq -- report" (Boston.com, Jan. 8) reports that the US military is considering the use of "elite hit squads" based on similar units created by the US military during the El Salvador guerrilla uprising in the 1980s.
It should be noted that during the El Salvador conflict, these elite hit squads were referred to as "death squads" by many people in El Salvador and in the international community. They have since been found to have committed numerous crimes and human rights abuses and murdered thousands of innocent civilians, including many women and children. The US military's proposal, if carried out, will amount to US-sponsored terrorism and a crime against humanity.
