Can we retire term flip-flop?

THE TERM flip-flop is the most annoying Bush-media collaboration since "shock and awe." Everyone seems to be perfectly willing to use flip-flop as a verb all the time now, but only insofar as it applies to John Kerry.

Can't we just try to pretend that political critique does not depend on coming up with a clever word or phrase that encompasses an entire career or military service and elected politics in one dimwitted paroxysm of alliteration?

I know polysyllables are out, but if Lacoste polo shirts with upturned collars can make a comeback, surely common sense and participatory democracy are about ripe for a renaissance as well.
