29 Massachusetts students who shine
Camille L. Theriaque, 47
School: Holyoke Community College
Degree: Liberal arts
Theriaque, a mother of three, was the first female African American firefighter in Holyoke history. She retired in 2008 after being diagnosed with leukemia. She enrolled in school once her illness was under control with the goal of helping emergency responders deal with post-traumatic stress. "Rather than sit home and not do anything, I decided I would go back to school and do something positive," she said.
