New Harvard Lampoon editor writes about her friend’s death on

Alexis Wilkinson , who just became the first black woman to run the Harvard Lampoon, has written an essay for about the recent death of her friend and roommate. She says in the heartbreaking feature — which was posted Tuesday as part of xoJane’s “It Happened to Me” series — that her best friend and longtime roommate was fellow student Angela Mathew , who died in a car accident on her way back from a Harvard Mock Trial Association trip last week. Wilkinson writes, “Angela and I had been roommates since freshman year. She was there when I applied to be on Lampoon in the fall, was rejected, and felt like it was proof I didn’t have what it takes to write comedy. She was there when I succeeded in getting on staff the next semester. She was there when I became President.” Wilkinson says that one of Mathew’s last texts to her was, “I love you so much Alexis. Now go out there and be funny.” Wilkinson wrote that she’s “going to try.” “I take solace in remembering her laughter and her desire for me to make others laugh. In her honor, I tell jokes. In her honor, I am going to be the funniest that I can be. That’s what she would’ve wanted. So that’s what I’m going to do.”
