Starz picks up sitcom produced by Tom Werner, written by Mike O’Malley

Starz has ordered six episodes of a half-hour comedy titled “Survivor’s Remorse” that will be executive produced by Red Sox chairman Tom Werner, written by Mike O’Malley, and inspired by the up-by-his-bootstraps story of NBA star LeBron James. The show — about a basketball star named Cam Calloway who signs a big contract to play in the pros and heads to Atlanta with his cousin/confidant — will debut next fall. “Ever since I got cut from the freshman hoop team at Bishop Guertin High School in 1980, I’ve wanted to write about my love and hatred of basketball,” O’Malley, a Nashua, N.H., native said in a statement. “Starz has given us great freedom to explore an authentic world inspired by [LeBron James’s business partner] Maverick Carter and LeBron.” Though perhaps best known as an actor for roles on “Glee,” “My Name Is Earl,” and “Yes, Dear,” O’Malley is also a consulting producer/writer on the Showtime series “Shameless.” Werner, meanwhile, has a track record of TV success, with small-screen credits that include developing/producing “Mork & Mindy,” “Taxi,” “The Cosby Show,” and “Roseanne.”
