Somerville’s Candlewick Press scored big time at the American Library Association’s annual youth book and media awards.
The publisher’s “Flora & Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures” by Kate DiCamillo took home the prestigious Newbery Medal, which honors the author of the year’s best children’s book. DiCamillo also won the Newbery in 2003 for “The Tale of Despereaux,” and she was a finalist in 2000 for “Because of Winn-Dixie.”
Candlewick published two other winners: “Fat Angie” by e. E. Charlton-Trujillo, which won a Stonewall Book Award, and “Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass” by Meg Medina, which took the Pura Belpre Award for a Latino writer. The independent press, owned by its employees, including some 85 staff members and 155 authors and illustrators, also published five of the awards finalists.
