Fairhaven woman faces motor vehicle homicide charges in New Bedford highway crash

A 26-year-old Fairhaven woman is facing charges after she rolled her car over while driving drunk on Route 140 in New Bedford and another driver was killed when his car slammed into her stopped vehicle, prosecutors said.

Caitlin Chouinard was charged with motor vehicle homicide by result of operating under the influence of liquor and negligent operation of a motor vehicle. It is not yet clear when and where Chouinard will be arraigned, Bristol District Attorney C. Samuel Sutter’s office said.

Chouinard lost control of her 2005 Jeep Liberty at about 2 a.m. today. The Jeep rolled over and came to rest in the northbound lane between Exits 4 and 5, Sutter’s office said.

Another Jeep, driven by Adam Taylor, 23, of Acushnet crashed into Chouinard’s vehicle shortly after, Sutter’s office said in a statement.

Chouinard was able to escape her vehicle before both Jeeps were engulfed in flames, the statement said.

Taylor was pronounced dead at the scene. Chouinard was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital. Sutter’s office said it did not know the extent of her injuries.

The incident is under investigation.
