The FBI’s Boston office is offering a $20,000 reward for the recovery of two high-powered rifles that were stolen in Andover – straight from an FBI SWAT team vehicle.

A Colt M16-A1 rifle and an HS Precision Pro-Series 2000 Sniper Rifle were stolen from the parked vehicle sometime between Wednesday evening and early today, the FBI said in a statement.

The statement did not say what the vehicle was doing there, or whether the weapons should have been left inside of it.

However, the statement said, “During that same time, items were stolen from other vehicles parked at nearby homes in Andover.”

FBI officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment on who owned the weapons.

“The FBI continues to devote significant resources to locate these weapons, determine who stole them and remove them from the possession of the unauthorized individuals(s) who may have them,” the statement said.

The statement added that local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies were notified of the theft through the Commonwealth Fusion Center, which shares law enforcement information, as well as through the Boston Regional Intelligence Center.

The theft is also being investigated by the Andover police and a violent crimes task force comprised of local law enforcement from Somerville, Malden, Saugus, Cambridge and Boston police as well as the State Police.
