One person was hospitalized and two others suffered minor injuries in a chemical explosion this afternoon at a commercial building in Woburn, officials said.
The blast at Powderpart Co. on 475 Wildwood Ave. occurred shortly after noon, and one person was critically injured and taken by helicopter to a Boston hospital, according to the state Department of Fire Services.
Authorities did not release that person’s age or gender or provide details on the victim’s injuries late this afternoon. Two other people, a civilian and a police officer, suffered minor injuries, Fire Services said.
The building was a single-story commercial building where race car cages are manufactured out of titanium powder, Fire Services spokesman Jennifer Mieth said in a statement, citing initial reports.
A hazardous materials response team responded to the scene to monitor the atmosphere. Woburn police and fire officials are at the scene.
State Police and personnel from the Department of Fire Services; the federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration are also at the scene investigating, Mieth said.
Officials have not released any information about the potential cause of the blast.
