Newton police believe they have apprehended the driver responsible for the hit-and-run that left an 87-year-old man seriously injured Friday night, according to a Newton police lieutenant.
The victim was struck and run over by a blue Honda when he was crossing Walnut Street about 7:15 p.m. He was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center with serious internal injuries.
On Saturday, in response to a tip, police went to the woman’s home where they discovered what they believe to be the car seen fleeing the site of the incident, according to Newton police spokesman Lieutenant Bruce Apotheker.
After detectives spoke with the woman, they discovered an unrelated warrant for her arrest and she was taken into custody on those charges, Apotheker said.
The investigation into the hit-and-run is ongoing, and charges are expected to follow, according to Apotheker.
Authorities have not released the names of the woman in custody or the victim. No other details were given, including on what charges the woman was taken into custody.
