Boston police seek suspect in cellphone store shooting death

Boston Police Department video

Boston police have released surveillance video of the alleged shooter in a brazen midday robbery at a Roxbury cellphone store in July that left a 19-year-old employee dead.

The video, which was released on the department’s website, appears to show a young male, wearing a baseball cap and a backpack, walking past storefront windows near the attack scene.

A police spokeswoman declined to say exactly from where the surveillance video was shot.

Police are asking for the public’s help to identify the individual, who allegedly robbed the store in the 1000 block of Tremont Street, near Northeastern University, shortly after 1 p.m. on July 31.

During the robbery, Joseph Morante, 19, of Revere, a store employee, was shot. He was later pronounced dead at Boston Medical Center.

Morante had recently received his GED and was engaged to be married to Diana Alvarez. He and Alvarez met in middle school when the two would walk their younger siblings home.

According to Alvarez, Morante was training at iWorld Accessories in East Boston before being transferred to the Roxbury store. He had been at that location for three weeks, and was scheduled to return to the East Boston location the following week.

The couple hoped to marry, have children, and raise them in East Boston, where his father lives. Morante, she said, dreamed of owning his own cellphone store.

Morante was living with Alvarez and her family in Revere at the time of his death. On the morning of his murder, Alvarez said Morante played with the family dogs, then the two went outside to wait for a taxi for his long commute to the cellphone store.

“He said, ‘I love you and I will see you later,’ ” Alvarez told the Globe a few days after he died.
