A Framingham State University employee was fired after allegedly misusing a university procurement card for as much as $167,000 in illegitimate expenses, an official said today.
The university became aware of the expenses when reviewing spending statements, said Rita Colucci, chief of staff and general counsel.
Colucci would not disclose the name of the individual but said the person had been terminated. When the university became aware of the spending, they immediately notified campus police who alerted the attorney general’s office. The university also notified the state auditor’s office, Colucci said.
The university believes that some of the spending may have been legitimate; $167,000 is the maximum amount that may have been misspent, Colucci said.
The university’s procurement card program was suspended. It could possibly be re-implemented in the future, but with new policies, procedures, and training for those using it, Colucci said.
Procurement cards are credit cards used by employees to make purchases for their businesses.
The attorney general’s office said it had no comment on the case.
