Two-alarm fire in Newton damages home; no serious injuries reported

A two-alarm fire damaged a home in Newton, but no one was seriously injured, officials said today.

A homeowner on Wolcott Street heard a smoke detector going off at just after 11 a.m. and found the fire in the upstairs of her home, said Newton Fire Lieutenant Eric Fricke.

Firefighters from Newton and surrounding towns arrived at the 2 1/2- story, wood-frame building and found the bulk of the fire in the attic, Fricke said.

Fricke described the fire as “heavy on arrival.”

It took firefighters about 45 minutes to extinguish the blaze, he said. A total of 35 firefighters fought the fire. The homeowner was not injured; one firefighter was treated on the scene for exhaustion, Fricke said.

Building inspectors and fire officials were assessing the damage and trying to determine the cause of the fire, Fricke said.
