JOHNSTON, R.I. — A man is being held without bail today on charges that he broke into a home here Sunday, fatally shot a mother and daughter, and then kidnapped the older woman’s 2-year-old son, who, after a frantic search, was found wandering the streets of Providence later in the day.
Daniel Rodriguez, whose address hasn’t yet been determined, was arraigned at the Johnston Police Department on charges that include murder, burglary, kidnapping, and illegal gun possession, said Police Chief Richard S. Tamburini.
“The last 24 hours has been extremely difficult and we are not breathing easy yet,” Tamburini said.
Rodriguez is charged in the murder of Evelyn Burgos, 40, and her daughter, Vanessa Perez, 25. He is also charged with kidnapping Isaiah Perez, Burgos’s son.
“The main focus of this united endeavor was not only to find Isaiah, but to remove a violent fugitive from society and provide closure for families and friends,” Tamburini said.
Tamburini said five shots were fired after Rodriguez broke into the house. Two other children, another son of Burgos’s and Perez’s daughter, were also in the house at the time.
Rodriguez, who was Burgos’s boyfriend, was arrested Sunday afternoon at a residence in Providence. When police asked Rodriguez about the motive for the crime, he told them it was “an ongoing domestic dispute,” said Tamburini.
Perez’s boyfriend was also arrested Sunday and described, along with Burgos, as a suspect. But Tamburini said today that Perez’s boyfriend was “not involved” in the crime and charges would be dropped.
Tamburini also credited Perez’s boyfriend with helping police to locate the little boy in Providence.
