Trooper injured when alleged drunk driver crashes into cruiser in Saugus

A state trooper was released from Massachusetts General Hospital today after suffering minor neck and back injuries Thursday night when a drunk driver crashed into his parked cruiser in Saugus, State Police said.

The trooper, whose identity has not been released, had parked his cruiser around 1 a.m. on the southbound side of Route 1 in Saugus after pulling over an Everett man who was found to be driving without a license, State Police said.

While the trooper sat in his cruiser, a Volkswagen Jetta crashed into the back of his vehicle, causing “heavy rear end damage,” State Police said.

State Police determined that the Jetta’s driver was drunk and arrested him for operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, State Police said. State Police have not released the driver’s name yet.

The trooper was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital and treated overnight. The driver of the car the trooper had pulled over will be summonsed to court, State Police said.
