Small earthquake shakes area near Waterville, Maine

A small earthquake with a magnitude of 2.6 shook the ground in Maine at 6:14 a.m. today.

The quake was centered 6 miles north of Augusta, according to the United States Geological Survey. No damage was reported.

Forty-three residents of the city of Waterville, 11 miles from the epicenter, reported to the USGS that they felt the ground shake. Twenty-two reports also came in from Augusta, 21 from Oakland, and 12 from Vassalboro.

A dispatcher from the Waterville Fire Department said a few men on duty felt the earthquake.
