Man fatally shot in Roxbury outside apartment building

A man was pronounced dead at Boston Medical Center Monday night after being shot in the chest outside the Holgate Apartments in Roxbury, according to Boston police.

Police Captain John Danilecki said the man was standing next to a car outside the seven-story Roxbury apartment building at Elm Hill Avenue and Seaver Street talking to people seated inside the car when an unknown assailant on foot shot the man and fled. Boston police and the Boston housing police blocked a section of Elm Hill Avenue while investigators examined the scene. Holgate Apartments is a Boston Housing Authority property.

“We are looking for two possible suspects that have fled the scene,” Danilecki said.

Police identified the victim but did not release his name Monday night, awaiting family notification, Danilecki said.

Homicide detectives were interviewing witnesses who were inside the car and others who were standing near the building entrance.

“We’re hopeful with the help that we’ve received from the public that we’ll be able to make some headway on this case,” Danilecki said.

Neighbors arriving home or passing through the intersection Monday night were alarmed by the police presence and word of the shooting.

A woman who said she had lived a few doors away on Seaver Street for a decade, but who asked that her name be withheld for her safety, said she had been just outside the Holgate building with friends enjoying the Memorial Day holiday a few hours before the shooting.

“It was a nice day, and people were cooking out,” she said. “And there were no problems.”

She said this stretch of the busy four-lane artery is generally peaceful, and she was concerned by what she found when she stepped outside around 9 p.m. to meet a neighbor.

“We came back outside, and we saw blue lights flashing. . . . It’s crazy. You can’t enjoy a peaceful holiday out here,” she said.
