State Police search for three suspects who fled after Holyoke traffic stop

State Police are searching for a trio of suspects who fled an early morning traffic stop in Holyoke, leaving behind their car, a loaded handgun, and spent shell casings, State Police said.

A trooper observed a gold Honda Accord fail to stop for a red light on Resnic Boulevard around 2 a.m. and pulled over the car to question the driver and his two passengers, State Police said in a statement.

After getting proper documentation from the driver, the trooper observed what he believed to be the barrel of a gun under the thigh of the front seat passenger, State Police said.

Fearing for his safety, the trooper backed away from the Honda, State Police said. It took off moments later, heading the wrong way down one-way Maple Street. The vehicle traveled a few blocks, then crashed into parked cars.

When the trooper caught up with the car, its passengers had fled, leaving behind a fully loaded 9mm handgun. Several spent shell casings that smelled like they had recently been fired were recovered near the vehicle, police said.

State Police are looking into the suspects’ identities and will seek arrest warrants.

No further information was immediately available.
