A 19-year-old man is denying allegations that he lured his former girlfriend and their baby to a Savin Hill street so his current girlfriend could stab her with a butcher knife while he restrained her, his lawyer said.

Daquan Sparks was arraigned today in Dorchester District Court. His attorney, Jessica Tripp, said Sparks says he did meet with the victim but did not set her up and did not restrain her. Sparks maintains he had no idea his current girlfriend, Samia Jones, who is also facing charges, was going to attack the victim, Tripp said.

Tripp also said the victim now says that she never told police that Sparks had restrained her.

Tripp entered a not-guilty plea on Sparks’s behalf to charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault with intent to murder, and assault and battery. He was ordered held without bail because the latest charge constituted a violation of his probation on a previous drug charge. Judge Rosalind Miller also set bail at $75,000 cash, despite a request by prosecutors for $500,000 cash bail.

Neither the prosecution nor defense mentioned an alleged motive for the attack.

Sparks has a lengthy criminal record dating back to when he was 10 years old, officials said. Probation Officer Dan Wight said Sparks “had been arrested pretty much every calendar year” from that age.

Jones, 17, is being held on $50,000 cash bail after her arraignment Tuesday on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault with intent to murder. She allegedly stabbed the victim six times, in her back, right leg, face, and torso.

Both the 21-year-old victim and Jones have babies fathered by Sparks, born just several months apart. Authorities have said Sparks lured the victim to the stabbing by saying he wanted to give their 8-month-old child a pair of sneakers.

While prosecutors have said the victim told them Sparks restrained her, Tripp said today that the victim now maintains she never told police that Sparks restrained her.

Assistant District Attorney Jessica OKeeffe said detectives were “very clear” that the victim told them that Sparks restrained her

The crime has shocked people in the Savin Hill neighborhood.
