Three Worcester firefighters had an unusual night at work when they were dispatched to a local apartment Saturday night to help a woman in labor.
Instead of simply waiting with the pregnant woman until paramedics arrived to take her to the hospital, the firefighters found that the woman was ready to deliver her baby immediately and could not wait to be taken to the hospital, said Worcester Deputy Fire Chief Geoffrey Gardell.
The firefighters helped bring a healthy baby girl in the world, Gardell said, and UMass Memorial Medical Center EMTs helped the father cut the girl’s umbilical cord after they arrived. The paramedics then took the mother and child to the hospital, Gardell said.
Gardell said although the department’s firefighters have helped deliver a few babies in recent years, he was pretty sure at least two of the firefighters on scene had never actually done it until Saturday night.
