According to Canton police, officers responded to 646 Chapman St., where they found the woman’s boyfriend bleeding from a bullet wound to his neck. He was rushed by medical helicopter to Boston Medical Center with what police said are non life-threatening injuries.

“He was conscious and talking when we got there,’’ said Deputy Police Chief Helena Findlen. “He is lucky.’’

Findlen said police do not believe the shooting was a random act, but she declined further comment because of the ongoing investigation.

“It doesn’t sound like he saw much,’’ Findlen said of the victim. “We are just trying to piece all the [information] together.’’

Police also did not identify the victim pending notification of next of kin.

Findlen said the victim lives with the the woman who made the 911 call, and her children, in a second-floor unit in the building.

She said police recovered one spent shell casing and one bullet at the scene.

The shooter fled the scene and is still at large.

Findlen said the shooting is the first in the South Shore town since at least 2011.
