Pine Manor College, a private four-year women’s college in Chestnut Hill, has named Ellen S. Hurwitz as interim president, the school announced today.
Hurwitz steps in for Alane Shanks, who was placed on paid administrative leave in late September after becoming a central figure in state and federal investigations of Roxbury Community College, where she was the vice president of administration and finance prior to her arrival at Pine Manor.
Hurwitz has more than 40 years of higher education experience. She has served as president of Albright College, New England College, and American University of Central Asia in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic, Pine Manor said.
“I am honored by the opportunity to represent Pine Manor and join its distinctive community,” Hurwitz said in a statement. “The college’s future is bright, and I am excited to work with faculty, staff, alumnae and board to refine and nurture its commitment to global education.”
Hurwitz received a bachelor’s degree from Smith College, as well as master’s and doctorate degrees from Columbia University.
Pine Manor, founded in 1911, has an enrollment of about 350.
