Both lanes of the Sumner Tunnel are now open after state officials concluded there was no significant damage done when the ceiling on the East Boston side was hit by an overheight truck today.
According to State Police and MassDOT, the 2008 Freightliner owned by McCoy National Lease Inc. of Green Bay was spotted on state cameras striking the tunnel ceiling around 11:15 a.m., triggering an emergency response from both agencies.
The right hand lane was closed during an safety inspection, but now both lanes are open, officials said this afternoon.
The truck was moved out of the tunnel once it released air from its tires, reducing its height, State Police said. The incident remains under investigation by the commercial truck unit of the State Police.
