Police are searching for four suspects in connection with a shooting that left five injured shortly after midnight on Orlando Street in Mattapan, Boston police said.
The suspects are all black males, said Officer Nicole Grant. She said she had no further description.
Police said the shooting, which left five people injured, occurred about 12:18 a.m. on Orlando Street near Monterey Avenue, a dead-end block that connects to playing fields at Hunt Park.
At the scene Monday, neighbors expressed dismay at the violence, which interrupted a cookout that followed a neighborhood six-on-six soccer tournament at the park.
“Somebody probably saw someone they had a problem with,” said Calvin Bailey, 31, of Mattapan, who is originally from Jamaica.
Bailey and others said the street is a popular hangout where he and other residents, many with ties to Caribbean islands, play dominoes, grill food, and talk.
“For someone to do something like this is senseless,” Bailey said. “Nobody’s out here dealing anything, no one tried to rob anything. We feel safe. We’re peaceful people.”
The victims, whom police did not identify, are being treated at various hospitals.
They include a 31-year-old woman shot in the abdomen, who was taken to Boston Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, Grant said. A 23-year-old man was shot in the eye and is being treated at Carney Hospital. A third victim, whose age was not released, was shot in the arm.
A fourth victim, who police said was not shot, transported himself to Carney Hospital with a leg wound. The cause of his injury was not immediately clear. One other person also suffered a minor injury and was treated and released on scene.
An investigation is ongoing, Grant said.
