A 34-year-old Barnstable mother was arrested Thursday evening and charged with driving drunk with her young daughter loose in the back seat, police said today.
Police responded to a call at about 7:30 p.m. regarding a vehicle being driven erratically near the village of Osterville.
An officer who responded to the call saw a vehicle driving west on Route 28. Officer Matthew Bulman said he saw the vehicle drive almost completely off the road before he pulled the car over.
The driver, Sarah Stewart, tried to get out of the car while it was still in drive, and fell into the side of her vehicle and the police cruiser while attempting field sobriety tests, police said.
Bulman reported that Stewart’s 4-year-old daughter was “moving around freely” in the back seat when he pulled the car over.
Stewart faces charges that include operating under the influence, child endangerment, marked lanes violation, and having a child under 5 years old without a car seat.
Stewart’s daughter was taken to police headquarters, where, police said, her father picked her up. The Department of Children and Families was also contacted.
Stewart is to be arraigned today in Barnstable District Court.
