Inspired to become a world-class marathoner by his older brother, three-time Boston Marathon champion Ibrahim Hussein, Mbarak Hussein is racing to his own victories. He has competed in the challenging Honolulu Marathon seven times, winning in 2001 and 1998 and placing third in 1999 and 2000. At the Boston Marathon last year, Hussein made his first appearance memorable with a strong fifth-place finish (2:12:01). Training at altitude in Albuquerque, Hussein regularly races in the United States. In 2001, he won the Stride for Pride 5,000 meters, the Duke City 5K and the Long Beach Half-Marathon. He also ran the Rock 'n' Roll Half-Marathon and finished third at the Monterrey Half-Marathon (62:30), the Americas Finest City Half-Marathon, and the Wharf to Wharf 6 Mile in 27:34.
