Tips on trimming the holiday table and tree from Ryan Zoeller, special events designer at Winston Flowers:

HOLIDAY TABLE DECOR Use a trio of plants such as individually planted amaryllises, orchids, or mini-cypress trees for your table. Repetition creates visual impact.

Coordinate your glassware and chargers to match your holiday decor; this creates continuity throughout the space.

TRIMMING THE TREE The tree should be placed as a focal point in the room.

String lights starting from the inside of the tree to the outside of the tree. Likewise, decorate the tree from the inside out; it gives more depth.

Use matte, glossy, sparkly, and natural ornaments to add interest to the tree.

A monochromatic color palette can create a dramatic statement on your tree.

The tree topper has evolved over the years from the traditional angel or star to more interesting designs. You can create a large bow for the top, or if you heavily decorate the top of the tree, you might decide that you don’t even need anything.
